How to Get Married at Lago di Braies: Wedding & Elopement Guide (2026)

(Updated for 2026)

Imagine saying your vows in the middle of the Dolomites, with Lago di Braies glowing that unreal shade of blue behind you. It’s quiet, it’s surreal, and honestly? It doesn’t even feel like real life, which is the most magical part.

If you’ve been dreaming about a destination wedding in Italy that feels equally beautiful and a little adventurous (yes, including a private rowboat excursion on the lake!), Lago di Braies is a destination that can truly live up to the hype…if planned correctly.

This guide breaks down everything you actually need to know to plan a wedding or elopement here - how to get there, where to stay, what to expect, and the best spots for your ceremony and photos. Let's turn your dream Italian Dolomites elopement into a reality!

How to Get to Lago di Braies

Driving is the most straightforward and the simplest way to reach Lago di Braies.

En route, you'll drive through incredibly scenic routes that give a glimpse into some of Italy's most beautiful mountain landscapes. Be sure to have a GPS handy (or offline maps downloaded on your phone) as you might lose cell signal in some of the more remote mountain pass areas.

Important note on driving to Lago di Braies: seasonal road restrictions limit car traffic during peak months. That means during the months of early July - mid September, you cannot drive all the way into Lago di Braies between 9:00am-4:00pm unless you’ve pre-booked a parking reservation. For elopements, this is quite not as big of a deal, because the best lighting will be before or after this restricted traffic timeframe (for sunrise or sunset).

Where to Stay Near Lago di Braies

Picking the right place to stay is super important for a stress-free destination wedding! Especially in the Dolomites, where most locations are very spread out. To avoid accidentally booking a hotel that’s 2+ hours away due to zig-zagging mountain roads, here’s a round-up of my top hotel suggestions. The Lago di Braies area has a ton of options, from five star hotels to cozy mountain lodges.

Luxury Hotels

If you want to splurge, the Hotel Alpen Tesitin is an incredible 5-star hotel option located only 20 minutes from Lago di Braies. Or, the beautiful Alpin Panorama Hotel Hubertus is about a 30 minute drive away. Both of these hotels will give you the best of the best when it comes to views, service, ambience and overall experience.

Boutique Hotels

Hotel Lago di Braies (the only hotel located right on Lake Braies) offers rooms with stunning lake views - ideal for your destination elopement or wedding in the Dolomites. Booking a stay here not only means that you'll wake up to those iconic views each morning, but you'll also have the earliest and latest possible access to the lake each day.

Alternatively, located a short 5-10 minute drive from the lake, Hotel Pragserhof or Hotel Erika are two mid-range options that both have a cozy aesthetic and will give you easy access to this gorgeous valley in the Dolomites.

Lago di Braies Wedding Locations

Now that you know how to get there and where to stay, let's dive into the best part - the most jaw-dropping spots for your wedding or elopement ceremony.

1. The Boathouse and Dock

The boathouse and dock at Lago di Braies are the most iconic wedding spot. Full information on how to rent the entire boathouse and dock location (with wooden rowboats included for your use!) for your private wedding ceremony is outlined in the next section of this guide. Scroll down to “Lago di Braies Boathouse Rental.”

2. The Lakeshore

A walking path winds around the entire lake, so you won't struggle to find multiple "lakeshore" options at Lago di Braies! The most common spot (and the location with the most room to spread out) is the beach area on the west side of the lake, just a short walk beyond the hotel. If you arrive early enough, you may have this epic viewpoint entirely to yourselves! It's a setting straight out of a fairytale.

3. The Chapel

There’s a small, fairytale-like chapel located right on the western shore the lake. Walk the super short path from the parking area past the hotel and over to the chapel, where you'll be greeted with even more impossibly picturesque views. This is a great photo-op to pair with the lakeshore.

4. The Meadows

For a more private setting after exploring the lake, trek over to a nearby scenic meadow. One of the best hidden gem meadow locations is a short distance off the main path that circles the lake (about a 45 minute walk from the main parking lot), and even has a mountain hut nearby for food and drinks.

These lush, green fields offer that peaceful and intimate atmosphere, with the mountains of the Dolomites (and some friendly alpine cows!) providing an otherworldly backdrop.

Lago di Braies Boathouse Rental

One of the most iconic features of Lago di Braies is its boathouse and collection of wooden rowboats. Renting the boathouse and dock area for a private wedding or elopement ceremony adds an incredibly unique and romantic touch to your wedding day in the Italian Dolomites.

Bonus: the full location private rental comes with access to the wooden rowboats, so you can paddle around the lake before or after your vows.

Gliding across the vibrant blue waters with your partner after just saying "I do" in one of the most beautiful places on earth? Now that is a way to celebrate!

How to Book the Boathouse and Rowboats

The entire boathouse and dock area can be rented privately for your ceremony and photos, but only on certain dates throughout the year. Be sure to check these dates before you plan the rest of your elopement.

Time slots are exclusively offered in the morning, which is actually ideal for avoiding crowds in the background of your photos.

The full location private rental is €600 for 1.5 hours, and includes use of 2 wooden rowboats.

Tips for Getting Married at Lago di Braies

Permit Requirements

Technically, no permits are required to plan part of your elopement at Lago di Braies. You can simply hike along the lakeside path and find a secluded, scenic spot to exchange your vows. However, if you want to guarantee privacy (since Lago di Braies is one of the most popular destinations in the Dolomites), I would highly recommend making a private boathouse booking.

Season and Weather

The best time to plan your wedding is from May to September when the weather is warm and the lake is easily accessible. However, mid-summer (especially during the month of August) can be very busy, so the months of May - June or September - early October are best for avoiding the peak season crowds. Also, it’s ideal to opt for a weekday for more privacy!

Hiring Local Vendors

Hiring local vendors is the best way to ensure a seamless elopement experience in the Dolomites. Local knowledge is super valuable when planning a destination wedding, especially in a foreign country.

As a northern Italy-based elopement photographer, I love helping my couples with not only choosing their ceremony and photo locations, but also with finding other local vendors who will make their dream day a reality.
